Carousel posts that get swiped: a step-by-step guide for Instagram and LinkedIn

The structure behind carousels that get saved and shared, design rules for phones, and how to turn one carousel into a reel and a LinkedIn PDF.

If you scroll through a busy feed, single images flash past in a fraction of a second. A carousel asks for a swipe, and every swipe tells the platform that people are spending time with your post. That is why carousels are one of the most reliable formats for saves and shares on Instagram and LinkedIn.

The good news: a strong carousel is mostly structure, not design talent.

The anatomy of a carousel that gets swiped

  1. Cover slide: a promise. One short line that says what the reader gets, such as "5 mistakes that make your bakery invisible on Instagram". Big text, high contrast, nothing else.
  2. Slides 2 to 6: one idea per slide. A short headline plus one or two supporting lines. If a slide needs a paragraph, split it.
  3. Proof slide (optional): a number, a before and after, or a short customer quote you are allowed to use.
  4. Last slide: the next step. "Save this for later", "Send it to a colleague" or "Book a table via the link in bio".

Design rules that keep it readable on a phone

  • Use the same layout on every slide so the eye knows where to look.
  • Keep at least 24 px of padding to the edges, because platforms crop.
  • Use one accent colour for the key word on each slide.
  • Show progress, for example "2/6", so people know how much is left.
  • Check right-to-left languages separately: Arabic text needs its own alignment.

Instagram vs. LinkedIn

On Instagram a carousel is a set of images, usually in 4:5 portrait format. On LinkedIn the best performing equivalent is a document post: the same slides exported as a PDF, which LinkedIn shows as a swipeable document. Same content, different file.

Turn one carousel into three pieces of content

A carousel already contains a script. Reuse it:

  • Reel or short: show the slides one after another with gentle motion and music. That gives you a vertical video for Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts.
  • LinkedIn document: export the slides as a PDF.
  • Story: post the cover slide as a story that points to the full post.

SocialMatik does this automatically: when the AI autopilot creates a carousel, it can also build the LinkedIn PDF version and a short slideshow video from the same slides.

Ten carousel ideas you can use this week

  1. Five mistakes your customers make, and the fix for each
  2. A step-by-step checklist for a task your audience does often
  3. Myth vs. fact in your industry
  4. Before and after, explained in steps
  5. Your process, from order to delivery
  6. Glossary: five terms beginners get wrong
  7. Three tools or products you actually use, and why
  8. Frequently asked questions, one per slide
  9. A mini case study: problem, action, result
  10. Seasonal tips, such as what to prepare this month

Measure the right thing

Likes are a weak signal for carousels. Watch saves and shares. If a carousel gets saved, make a follow-up on the same topic within two weeks.
